I paint directly from life. I build a likeness through rapid, uncensored strokes. My goal is not to judge but to observe, to distill a sense of the person without distraction or detail. Backgrounds aren’t my focus; I want the person. I hope to give a sense of the sitter alone, through these rough coloured marks – a fact I do not disguise – I celebrate. Luscious paint. Mostly acrylic for speed and oils for nuance.

My prize is catching an unguarded glimpse of the person. A genuineness to record and form in paint.
